Naíonra Naíthí was originally established in the 1970s by Peig Uí Chaollaí in her own home in Dublin. Peig is a native Irish speaker from Connemara, with a background in Montessori education.

She was heavily involved with An gComhchoiste Réamhscolaíochta from its inception. This organisation had been established to promote preschool education through Gaeilge (Réamh-scolaíocht tré mheán na Gaeilge) and the term Naíonra was established. Her aim was to provide a Naíonra - a safe, happy and friendly environment for young children in Ceantar Naithí.

As Naíonra Naithí grew it came under the umbrella of Comhlucht Gaeloideas Naithí Teo. (A limited company, a registered charity and the parent body of Scoil Naithí, Ballinteer) and moved to the Scout's Den in what was the Servite Priory in Rathfarnham. Peig was joined by Annette de Paor who was experienced in primary school education, Montessori education and working with hearing impaired children.

Eventually in 1993 Naíonra Naithí, with the support of parents, moved to the beautiful purpose built location where it resides on the campus of Scoil Naithí.
